st-Art Cultural Corner: Anselm Kiefer Exhibition in Amsterdam

We had this unique opportunity to visit Anselm Kiefer, German artist, exhibition titled "Sag mir wo die Blumen sind" ("Tell Me Where the Flowers Are")  in Amsterdam. This retrospective, commemorating Kiefer's 80th birthday, is collaboratively presented by the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum. This exhibition includes beautiful giant artworks of him.

At the Van Gogh Museum, the exhibition explores the profound influence of Vincent van Gogh on Kiefer's work. It features a selection of Van Gogh's masterpieces alongside Kiefer's interpretations, highlighting the thematic and stylistic connections between the two artists. Notably, Kiefer's homage to Van Gogh's "The Starry Night" exemplifies this dialogue.

The Stedelijk Museum showcases Kiefer's extensive engagement with themes of history, memory, and human fragility. A centerpiece is a monumental 24-meter-long painting, "Sag mir wo die Blumen sind," which incorporates materials such as clay, dried flowers, straw, gold leaf, and lead. This work draws inspiration from Pete Seeger's anti-war song, using the sunflower motif to address the human condition.

The exhibition also presents Kiefer's "Venice Cycle," a series of war-themed works, and "Steigend, steigend, sinke nieder," composed of photographs and lead, reflecting on human history's weight. Additionally, three of Kiefer's films are featured, offering a comprehensive view of his artistic exploration. โ€‹
